Structured Authoring In Your HAT (Help Authoring Tool)

“Structured authoring” is a hot topic in tech comm. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of uncertainty about it, even about issues as basic as what it is and how to do it. For some groups, “structured authoring” means either Structured FrameMaker or DITA. But what if budget limits or company culture or politics won’t let you switch to Structured FrameMaker or DITA?

This presentation starts by discussing structured authoring’s benefits and a definition supported by mainstream help authoring tools. Finally, we’ll look at two specific features, topic type templates and stylesheets, of two mainstream help authoring tools, MadCap Flare and Adobe RoboHelp, that can provide users of those tools and, by extrapolation, users of similar tools, with most of the benefits of structured authoring simply, quickly, and inexpensively.
